Symptoms of Dehydration That Can Be Treated With an IV Drip

A cold or flu can cause dehydration, and dehydration can have its own set of uncomfortable symptoms. The following are possible dehydration symptoms from colds and flus, and how IV fluids can help:

Nausea

Nausea caused by dehydration can lead to vomiting, which worsens dehydration problems.

Dry mouth and skin

You may notice your skin looks dull and dry when you are dehydrated. Dehydration can also cause your mouth to become dry.

Dark urine

It is important to note that the vitamins present in the Dehydration IV or the Myers' Cocktail may temporarily cause your urine to turn bright yellow due to the dehydration.

Fainting/light headed

If you are severely dehydrated, you may experience dizziness with position changes, which is caused by your body trying to raise your blood pressure to your brain, if you are dehydrated, your blood pressure falls and your heart beats faster to compensate. If you feel dizzy when you go from sitting to standing, you likely have what is known as orthostatic blood pressure. This is when your heart rate changes by more than 20 beats a minute, and your systolic blood pressure falls below 100. It can sometimes result in a loss of consciousness and a syncopal episode (fainting).

Fatigue

It is common to feel sleepy, tired, and listless when you are chronically dehydrated.

There are many unpleasant and potentially dangerous symptoms associated with dehydration, which can be reduced and oftentimes eliminated with IV dehydration treatment. You may need to consult your doctor depending on your symptoms. Symptoms like fainting can indicate severe dehydration. We will assess your symptoms before administering IV drips.

What is Intravenous Rehydration?

As children and infants are more likely to become dangerously dehydrated than adults, intravenous rehydration is often prescribed by hospitals to treat moderate to severe dehydration. When oral rehydration is insufficient, such as if dehydration is advanced or if one is ill, such as diarrhea, vomiting, or a high fever, this is done. In intravenous rehydration, fluids are introduced into your system quickly by sidestepping the digestive process.

By pumping fluid directly into your bloodstream with an IV line, doctors are able to deliver fluid and electrolytes that your body can use immediately. As a result, you will be stabilized while you undergo treatment and, over time, your hydration will return to normal. Typically, nurses will look for veins in your arm since they are easy to access and usually wide enough to be easily hit. However, if you have narrow veins (often the result of genetics) or collapsed veins (often the result of chronic intravenous injections), they may have to search for veins elsewhere.
